How Many Players Does Big Walk Support?
Big Walk supports a minimum of two players and a maximum of 12. House House does not identify one group size as the ideal choice: smaller groups create a more focused co-op experience, while larger groups become intentionally more chaotic. The same adventure can therefore feel quite different depending on how many friends join.
When the host starts a session, they choose a 2-player, 3-player, or 4+-player version of the world. This setting changes how some challenges are configured, but it does not impose a hard cap on who can join. The official FAQ recommends treating the selection as the minimum number expected to participate throughout the session.
If attendance will change during a long play session, choose the lower setting that your group can reliably maintain. A player can join later without forcing the host to restart, but a puzzle configured for more participants may be harder to complete after people leave. Challenge skipping is available when a task becomes inaccessible.
Does Big Walk Have Crossplay?
Yes. Big Walk supports crossplay across its available Windows, macOS, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 versions. Friends do not need to purchase the game on the same storefront or system to share a session.
Cross-platform groups can use a Join Code when a normal platform friends list does not connect everyone. Each code is short, unique, and generated when the host starts a session. The Mac App Store version does not support Game Center friend-game discovery, so Join Codes are the expected method there.
Players also need compatible game versions. Big Walk version numbers contain three parts, such as 1.2.3, but only the first two numbers must match for players to connect. If a friend cannot join after an update, compare those first two numbers before investigating network settings.
How Hosting and Save Progress Work
The host owns the save file and keeps the group’s shared progress. Saving happens automatically, so there is no manual save command to remember. When the group wants to continue later, the same host must start that saved world again.
Other players connect only after the host has started and loaded into the world. If the host ends the session, every connected player is disconnected as well. Choose a reliable host who is likely to be present whenever the regular group wants to continue.
The host can manage the active group from Session Details. Moderation Settings provides controls for muting or removing players, and a password can restrict access. The official FAQ recommends protecting a session when a Join Code might appear on a stream or be shared beyond the intended group.
How to Join a Friend’s Big Walk Game
Wait for the host to enter the world
The host should launch the saved game first and wait until their character is loaded. A session may not accept connections correctly while the host is still at an earlier menu.
Use the friends list or Join Code
An active game should appear automatically when the host is a friend on the same platform service. Otherwise, enter the short Join Code shared by the host.
Enter the password if required
A host can set or change a password under Session Details. The Join Code identifies the session, while the optional password controls access.
Confirm the version numbers
Compare the first two parts of every player’s game version. Install pending updates if those numbers do not match.
Why Proximity Chat Matters
Big Walk is designed around its built-in voice and text chat rather than a separate call. Communication changes with distance and the environment: players may become difficult to hear, disappear beyond proximity range, or be separated by soundproof glass. Walkie-talkies, radio transmitters, and other in-game tools extend communication without bypassing the puzzle design.
A microphone is not mandatory. The in-game text system follows the same intentional limitations as voice chat, including reduced reach over distance and interaction with communication items. Players can mix voice and text according to their needs without losing the core rules.
House House strongly advises against using Discord or another external voice channel during play. The game will not punish the group, but external communication removes challenges built around silence, gestures, and partial information. Those restrictions are part of the intended multiplayer experience rather than a technical inconvenience.
Solo Play, Local Co-op, and Matchmaking
Big Walk has no dedicated single-player mode. A lone player can start a world and explore part of the island, but cooperative challenges prevent meaningful progress. The game is explicitly built around teamwork and conversation.
There is also no same-screen local co-op or online matchmaking. House House describes Big Walk as a long-form adventure for a group that returns over multiple sessions, so the game expects players to organize friends rather than receive random teammates. Every participant needs access to a supported device and copy of the game.
People in the same house can still play together if they use separate devices and separate rooms. Staying physically apart prevents players from hearing speech outside the game when proximity chat is supposed to block it. Playing side by side in one room would undermine several communication puzzles.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many players can play Big Walk?
Big Walk supports 2–12 players. The host selects a 2-player, 3-player, or 4+-player version of the world so some challenges can adapt to the group.
Does Big Walk support crossplay?
Yes. The official FAQ confirms that players on different supported systems can play together.
Can you play Big Walk solo?
